Why Can’t You Wake Up Early ► Explained With Dark Souls
Have you ever planned to wake up early, but then when the morning comes, it’s like you weigh 300 extra pounds and you’re like stuck to your bed? I started to think that it’s actually just impossible. I guess I can’t wake up early. I could always get up on time for things like school or work or meeting friends or stuff like that. Of course, I wasn’t going to sleep in if other people were counting on me. But when it came to
Waking up just for myself, for something like exercising or working on my YouTube channel, for some reason, it was like 10 times harder. I remember a couple years ago, I used to be really bad about this. If I ever wanted to get up just like a little bit early for myself to work on YouTube or or do whatever I wanted to do. It was like 10 times harder to get out of bed. I would want to be doing
More, but I kept showing myself that I can’t do it. And so after some days, some weeks, some months, I just gave up. It was just impossible. I guess I just can’t wake up early. But now, now I can wake up early or whenever I want. Actually, I learned from the game Dark Souls that all it takes is a little preparation. I’m going to tell you how to wake up early, and I’m going to explain it with Dark Souls. It’s
Actually a pretty simple idea from the game, but I never thought that it could be applicable to like real life scenarios. But I swear like once you start living life like you’re playing Dark Souls, life actually gets easier. Imagine this. All right, there’s a boss fight in Dark Souls 1 where you fight two bosses at once, Ornstein and SMO. It’s a pretty tough boss fight since there’s two guys instead of just one. But the actual run from the bonfire to
The boss room for Ornstein and SMO is tough as well. You got to run past these guys and watch out for that guy and oh shoot, look out for these big guys. Then when you finally get there, you probably got hit a bunch of times and needed to heal up a lot already. So, you’re already starting the boss fight like half empty. In Dark Souls, part of beating the boss is first successfully beating the boss run, the run to the
Boss without taking damage. Before you master the boss, you got to master the boss run. Once you master the boss run, you can keep going back. And if the boss is super tough like Orinstein and SMO are, you can use all your healing when you actually try to fight them and master their move sets. Imagine you spend all this time trying to get to the boss and fighting all these stupid enemies that are not even the boss. And
Then by the time you get there, all of your healing is gone and you’re already down to like half of your health. When you get into the actual boss room, you don’t have any time or resources to actually spend on the boss. you’re probably just going to die again and then you’re going to have to run back and do it all over again. You have to master the boss run first so that you don’t lose everything before you even
Get there. And this concept is what I took from Dark Souls and applied it in real life to wake up early. You need to have systems in place to make it as easy as possible for yourself to wake up early. There are three main things which affect the success of your morning plans. First is planning. If you don’t have at least a rough idea of what the morning is going to look like, then it’s going to take more brain power when you
Do wake up to decide all these things in the morning, like you know exactly what to do and when to do it. So, as soon as you wake up, you’re eager to get started because it feels like you have a mission. You have something to do. You have items to check off. You actually have things planned. For example, let’s say you want to wake up early to exercise. Even if you don’t have a perfect plan for what exercise you’re
Going to do, maybe you at least know that it’s going to be a leg day, now you have at least a general idea of how long it’s going to take and what kind of things you’re expecting to do when you wake up. The second thing is clarity. The thing that you are waking up for needs to be clear. So like if you don’t know exactly what you’re going to be doing in the morning, it leaves the
Version of you that wakes up in a morning fog to figure it all out. And that person is not going to figure it out. that person just woke up and can’t even comprehend any words spoken to him. For example, to have more clarity for the morning, let’s say we still want to do leg day, right? And we know we want to do leg day in the morning. Okay, but at what time are we going to start? Are
We going to need to fill up our water bottle first? What clothes are we going to wear? What’s the first exercise going to be? And for how many sets and reps are we going to do it? So, it’s not always as simple as just saying, “I’ll do legs in the morning.” Because even if you have a general plan, you’re not giving your tired morning brain enough instructions. If you need to think as soon as you wake up, it’s going to make
You want to stay in bed more. You want to make a list and give yourself as many instructions as possible for the morning. Do all the thinking the night before so in the morning you don’t have to. You can just do it. And the third thing is purpose. Does the thing you’re waking up for actually feel purposeful to you? Does it feel like it’s actually important enough for you to dedicate time to it? If not, then we might need
To re-evaluate things because dedicating time for things which are not fulfilling to us will not lead to a fulfilling existence. Of course, you’re going to want to stay in bed if you don’t want to do what you say you’re going to do. All these YouTubers and influencers online and even people in your life will tell you like you need lots of discipline. You need to build your discipline. You need to be motivated to wake up early,
To do these things that you want to do, whatever they are. But you actually just need to plan it out and care about what you’re doing. Doesn’t that make sense? Like if you care about something and you want to do it, why don’t you prepare for it? If the goal is to stay in bed, then make yourself as unprepared as possible for the day. Give yourself every reason not to do it. Give yourself as little reasons as possible to do the thing.
Don’t go to bed at a reasonable time. Don’t sleep for enough time to make you well rested. Don’t make a list of things you want to do when you wake up so that when you do wake up, you forget and you don’t know what to do. Don’t do something that is purposeful to you. But if the goal is to actually get out of bed and wake up early in the morning, then make yourself as prepared as
Possible. Give yourself as many reasons to get out of bed as possible. Go to bed at a reasonable time, especially if you’re wanting to wake up early. Get enough sleep. The night before when you’re about to sleep, make a list of the things you want to do when you wake up. This way, you don’t need to think about anything in the morning when you’re super groggy and tired. You just do the first thing on the list and go
From there. Do something that is purposeful to you, that means something to you. I just want you to think like why would someone rather stay in bed in the morning instead of go to school? Why would they do that? And we’re going to exclude depression from this. Okay, just listen to me. I think the reasons why they would want to go to school and the reason for me why I ended up going to school anyway, it was because like,
Okay, maybe I don’t like the actual content of the stuff that we’re learning at school. Maybe it’s boring to me. Maybe I just don’t care about it. But I still had the motivating factor in my mind that I just want to go because I want to not be a a lazy ass, you know? I want to show up. I want to have at least a good attendance. You know, another reason is I wanted to see my friends.
But for someone else, like my sister for example, she didn’t have these same reasons and so she just stayed in bed. If you think about it like this, what reason did she have to go to school? I can see now in hindsight that even if I didn’t realize it at the time, I had reasons why I was going to school. But without these reasons, I would probably also not go to school. If you have more reasons to do
The thing, it becomes easier for you to actually do it. Give yourself every reason to follow through with it. Make it as easy as possible for you to do it. You don’t always need to rely on motivation or discipline. If you have systems in place that make it feel easy for you to do it, then you don’t need motivation or discipline. You’re just going to want to do it. Everything is already ready for you. Just like Dark
Souls, like running back to the boss, you got to make it as easy as possible for yourself to actually win the boss. So, you first got to get good at getting to the boss room without taking so much damage so that you can spend all your energy and resources fighting the actual boss. Before you go to bed, make a detailed list of the things you want to do tomorrow tonight. This is what mine looks like. It’s just like a really
Detailed list of just everything that you’re going to do today. wake up. Computer on. Uh workout, do this exercise. Stretch eggs. Um like how many eggs are you going to have today? Uh what are you going to have with the eggs? Shower. Everything like I’ll say um I I won’t say like work on YouTube though, you know, as part of the list. I won’t put just work on YouTube. It has to be more specific than that. So work on YouTube.
What does that actually entail though? For me, I don’t say work on YouTube. I would say work on this specific script for this specific video and do this specific thing in the script. Do this specific part of the script. You know, so I know exactly what I’m doing. There’s no confusion. I just have to do the thing now. You don’t write vague things. Okay? Make a specific detailed list. Then go to bed at a reasonable time. then sleep enough or at least try
To before waking up and following your list. And of course, these items on your list become like a world of a difference easier if you actually care about them. When the thing that you’re doing is actually important to you.
