Everyone’s got an opinion about how you should live. Everyone’s criticizing, arguing over, uh, this celebrity should have done this, or if I were him, I would have
Done it like this. We even judge our own family members in family politics. And in Dark Souls, it’s the same. Broken characters criticize and judge and try to tell you who you are and what you’re worth and why you should just give up. So, how do you know which path is right? How do you know what kind of man you actually want to be? Marcus Aurelius had the answer. Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be. Be one.
That’s it. Stop debating. Stop waiting for approval. Stop trying to win arguments. Decide who you are and prove it through your actions. Because in the end, it’s up to you to decide who you are. It’s not about pleasing anyone else. It’s about deciding with your own heart who you are and showing it through your actions, through the things that you do, because the things that you do reflect what you actually care about. And when you continue, he fights you out of resentment. Not because you’re wrong, but because you kept going where he gave up. Frampton and Cth from Dark Souls 1. They both try to manipulate you into believing their path and tell you the other is a traitor, but they don’t
Actually care who you are. They only care about what you can be used for. This is the world trying to define you. Telling you who you should be, but never actually asking you or caring about what you wanted to be, who you want to be. Who do you want to be? Are you noticing the pattern with these characters? They don’t act. They just sit there and they just talk. They don’t live. But they tell you how you should live, though.
They sit in safety consumed by thoughts and they tell you what to do. But why would you listen to someone who lives a life that you yourself would not want to live? Why would you take advice from someone who does not have anything that you want? These characters cast doubt. It’s too late. You’re not strong enough. Why even bother? you’ll just end up like me anyway. But you keep going because you choose to. That’s what makes you the
Difference. You don’t need approval. You don’t need to win an argument. You show who you are by how you act in the face of failure, doubt, and judgment. You can follow the advice of everyone with the hope that you’ll make everyone happy, but you won’t. Especially in Dark Souls, like ain’t nobody going to be happy no matter what you do. Understand what it takes. People who are already content with their lives will not look to put other people down. It’s only those who are unhappy and see someone else doing what they should be doing, too. It’s only them who are jealous and judgmental and even conniving. People who have given up often try to tell you what to do. Not because it’s wisdom, not because it’s always wise, but maybe sometimes it’s out of fear or insecurity or some kind
